Jan Halle
Opening Friday September 3 from 6-10pm
runs from September 3 – September 25, 2004
Curated by Odie Rynell Cash

The photography of Jan Halle is concerned with exploring the notion of the modern urban landscape. In his images he addresses the relationship between interior and exterior architectural spaces and structures that constitute a city . Born in Denmark (1967), Halle is a Tokyo based photographer who is active internationally. Recent group shows have included The Center for Fine Art Photography, MOCA, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA; 2004; Mission Jeunes Artistes, Forum de L'Image, Toulouse, France, 2004 ; 46th International Awards Exhibition, San Diego Art Institute, San Diego, CA, USA; 2003. and Nagata Arts Center, Kobe, Japan, September 2001. Solo projects include Urban Perspectives, Nos, Tokyo, Japan; 2004 and Urban Spaces, Roti, Tokyo, Japan; 2003.

Influenced by the notions of realism, objectivity and representation the mood of Halle’s photographs are melancholic and defiantly anarchistic and are directed towards a fragmented and personal interpretation of urban space. Halle is fundamentally connected to the notion of the photograph and uses the language of photography not as an immediate actuality, but as a reconfiguration of reality. This exhibition of ten (10) photographs taken in the cities of Tokyo, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and London examines the banal concepts of cosmopolitan life.

This administration, greedy and irresponsible, has taken hostage the American people. Acting on behalf of a few profiteers, hiding behind layers and layers of lies, they have done so at the expense of senseless killings and suffering of millions.

It is up to us to uncover the truth, discuss it, and do something about it. To open the eyes of those who, inexplicably, still believe in Bush and his group. Think for a moment about the real criminals here, the ones who have betrayed us all.

Let's not jeopardize the future of America and the whole world in the next four years.

Miguel was born in California in 1975 and raised in Monterrey, México. He studied Architecture at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM). A self-taught artist, he has exhibited throughout the United States and México. He currently lives in the city of Houston.

Karaoke Allegiance!

The public ritual of aligning oneself with a country and assuming a national identity is often linked to abstract notions such as national pride, equality, justice and opportunity. In the United States, school children pledge their allegiance to the American flag with hands over their hearts and gazes fixed onto that symbol of democracy, liberty, and opportunity. In very practical terms, we ask millions of children to re-affirm their allegiance every day, as if to suggest a potential forfeit of individual identity and cast-away citizenship.

As adults, we are asked to affirm our allegiance to the United States by buying and dying. Capitalism allows us the chance to demonstrate pride and national identity and the military gives us the chance to make the 'ultimate sacrifice' for our country.

Karaoke Allegiance! provides an opportunity to express your patriotism using the contemporary ritual of public performance and song, and of course, your gaze fixed onto the symbol of democracy and freedom.

Yes Sir is a tactical collaboration producing work that incorporates found sounds and images with electronic media into installations involving audience participation and site-specific contents, as well as the occasional karaoke song.
