a shift in the fabric:
Odie Rynell Cash

Opening Friday April 22, 2005
from 6pm-10pm
April 22 - May 14, 2005

At Polvo, Cash will show selections from a new body of work in an exhibition titled ‘a shift in the fabric'. Cash installs objects, drawings, videos and digital images questioning recent conventional thinking of national surroundings and ideas about reformulation, the use of religion, patriotism and “assisted” self-improvement. The basic concept for the exhibit is the relationship between personal ideas/beliefs and social standards in addition to questioning current experiences at face value as out of the ordinary circumstances in the context of the everyday.

Phantom(s) of Liberty
Medium: video performance w/ sound sample (time 00:07:12 -looped w/ one minute intervals)

Description: Work that addresses the contradiction of aggressor and peacekeeper and what negates ideas of freedom/democracy through intimidating means and conservative ideas.
Pistol Toting
Mediums: body drawing/black rolling ball ink on skin (small drawing of a gun between my left thumb and forefinger to only be seen by catching a glimpse)
live viewing possibilities for Polvo exhibit opening night. Digital images to be left for exhibition.

Description: A small childlike drawing of a gun is placed between my thumb and forefinger and is mostly concealed away from the viewer unless my hand is in a position as to where the image is visible. This project drawing relates to the personal experience of being held up at gunpoint December 2004 and serves to represent a cultural trope of great political concern and political power.
What are you struggling with? (ongoing)
Medium: collected medicine bottles (various installation formats/sometimes alone or with other related objects)

Description: Addresses our current obsession with self improvement through synthetic means to solve the problems that are to make us fit into American society.
In the name of.....(2005)
Medium: wall installation/ communion wafers mounted on board, digital images from television media sources (hand cut)

Description: Addresses the use of religion as one of the justifications of war specifically the War on Terror. Communion wafers with digital images attached collected from media sources such as MSNBC, FOX NEWS and CNN which addresses issues such as oil and occupation; juxtaposing politics and religion visually to represent the general outcome of such a mix..
 Preaching
Mediums: digital images on gloss paper documenting an unknown persons process, 5.5 x 4.5 inches each

Description: Around the Eastside of Detroit an individual has been writing messages related to religious experience. These statements (ironically or purposely) are applied only to objects that relate to the government (mailboxes, stop signs) or corporate entities (ATM's , phone booths). Whereas the statements speak to a single religious belief it's concept speaks to a larger national objective of the recent infusion of government, big business and evangelicalism when applied to these everyday objects.
